To Whom it may concern: As the founder (in 1984) and artistic director of a series of classical concerts, it is my pleasure to provide this reference for Gemini, a unique duo combining piano four hands and music for flutes with piano or harpsichord. Valerie and Julie Rutter are identical twins. Val is right-handed while Julie is left-handed. In addition to playing the piano, Julie plays flute while Valerie plays recorder. Both are accomplished chamber musicians, and I have acquired their services three times in various circumstances. I booked Valerie while she was the pianist with the Artemis Trio. I booked both with soprano Marisa Gaetanne for my 1996/97 series. In this concert, Valerie played harpsichord for the baroque segment. In 1998, Valerie and Julie played as Gemini in a variety fund-raising benefit for a concert grand piano. Most recently, I heard the twins in concert February 28, 1999 at Pender Harbour, and I decided to engage them in their own right to open The Coast Recital Society's 2000/2001 series. Julie and Valerie are thoroughly familiar with everything they play, and they are superbly matched in every nuance of their performances. They take turns in intoducing the music they play, and their comments are not only amusing and enlightening but also enriching in terms of musical enjoyment. Julie and Valerie are as attractive as they are personable and they are fine musicians. Their programming is eclectic and well chosen to illustrate their various talents. A Gemini program typically ranges from baroque works and music from the classical era to the twentieth century music. As a presenter, I have no hesitation in recommending Gemini. Val and Julie are thoroughly professional in what they undertake, and I know audiences are going to enjoy their performances, I would be pleased to answer any questions about Gemini.
